A video clip showing a group of workers trimming an elephant’s tusk in Kerala, a southern state in India, has alarmed animal rights groups. Artisans can be seen cutting, sawing and shaving the animal’s tusk, using old and rusted tools. During the entire process, the elephant keeps lying on the ground, frequently gasping. The video was shot at Thiruvarattukav, near Attingal of Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala on November 6. Such trimming is done to remove broken or damage part of the tusk.

@chaitanyareddymuthyala2967منذ 3 سنواتDon't over worry, they see their elephants as their sons , some even view them as Lord ganesha , so most of the elephants are well treated, giving id="hidden1" class="buttons"> an injection to a child doesn't mean we are hurting him , it's same with elephants, if we don't trim the tusks of tamed elephants, their tusks poses sivere threat to them ....وسعت49

@guestuser1671منذ 4 سنواتI don't get this. Yes, there are "privately owned" elephants in India and Indonesia who are horribly mistreated and are in dire need of rescue id="hidden2" class="buttons"> and a good home. But this elephant looks healthy and in good shape, and the (necessary!) tusk trimming is done in the most careful and professional manner. It only takes a few minutes and the elephant doesn't even flinch. Seriously, PTEA should focus on the elephants who really need it. ....وسعت82

@rrshankar2000منذ 2 سنواتPETA should focus on the mindless slaughter of animals during some festive seasons instead of the harmless trimming of an elephant's rusks. The elephant id="hidden3" class="buttons"> does not need any sedation, look how calm and quite the great creature is. As long as the trimming does not touch the nerve which is well inside the length of tusk, no harm is being done and this is an even necessary procedure. ....وسعت8
@
@buttermepancake3613قبل 4 أشهرOf course PETA would be upset at a procedure that actually helps the animal 1
@
@sara9271منذ 6 سنواتTusks don't have blood flow nor a root so it probably can't feel pain through it. I imagine the elephant is a little sedated otherwise it probably would be a risk to those around it. 17

@
@virtuousman794منذ 5 سنواتGuy's this practice is being carried out in Kerala for centuries the uncontrolled growth of tusks causes very serious health problems for tuskers and id="hidden5" class="buttons"> they do not have natural ways to get rid of it so the owner's bring in the professional's for the job this action is carried out under the strict supervision of forest officials and the trimmed pieces are weighed in the public presence and is taken into custody and send to nearest forest office strong room the owner's are not even allowed to take a small piece out of it after this process the tusks are measured and entered in the official register and it will be verified in the next trimming season this trimming process has nothing to do with elephants health the only problem is that they'll feel a small irritation during the trimming process so in order to prevent this they continuously pour water over the tusks ....وسعت41
