In the medieval world, after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th-century AD, monkish devotion to writing gave more sources and created chroniclers. Much like the annals of Rome, chroniclers simply made timelines, as in a list of dates and events with no attempt to connect these things. Chroniclers are not historians, for they are not telling a story, but they formed the basis of many historians who studied chronicles while in their monastic orders throughout the middle ages, such as the Venerable Bede.
