The Gauteng provincial government has said this week that it will now sue the editor of the Pretoria News newspaper Piet Rampedi, and its owner Independent Newspapers, over his claim that the Gauteng Premier and the Health MEC had hidden ten babies. Rampedi had claimed that the provincial government had taken the babies after they were all born to one woman. Rampedi has now admitted to his own company that the story was not true and apologised to them, but he has not apologised to the public for repeatedly claiming that the story was true. He has also not retracted the story. Witswatersrand University's Media Studies Department Associate Professor, Glenda Daniels, sheds light on why government suing a media house might set a bad precedent.
